Strange Charm is a band based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We are an alternative rock/funk group with musical inspirations lying from reggae and funk to pop punk and metal, melding many sounds in between.

The band formed during studies at Grant MacEwan University’s music program in September 2015, with what started out as a contemporary combo class. However, it didn’t take long to realize that everyone felt that the band should continue outside of and beyond the class. Rehearsals then became much more focused on writing and learning original music, with the ultimate goal of finding and refining a unique sound.

The name Strange Charm was decided upon from a mutual love of science and technology shared by everyone in the band. It refers to two kinds of quarks that fit together while still maintaining a strange, unique characteristic.

Everyone in the band originates from the Edmonton area, with a shared passion for music that led us all to study under the same program where we would eventually meet and form the foundation for Strange Charm.

On vocals and keys we have Danielle Abel, who currently teaches music and performs around Edmonton and Calgary with various acts. She is completing her sixth year of study at MacEwan in a quest for constant improvement. Danielle’s largest musical influence comes from the group Marianas Trench, due to the powerful vocals of Josh Ramsay and the cohesive sound of the band.

Playing guitar in the band is our newest member Kent Shores. Kent is an educator, composer, and recording engineer in the Edmonton area. He is a graduate of the University of North Texas with a degree in Jazz Studies. His influences range from Jimi Hendrix, Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, Daniel Lanois, Mahavishnu Orchestra, to South Indian Carnatic music.

Our bassist is Logan Ware, also a MacEwan composition student in his third year. Logan is also active in the music scene, playing with a few different groups in and around Edmonton. His largest influence to what he brings to Strange Charm’s sound comes from the Swedish metal/jazz band the Diablo Swing Orchestra. Logan is heavily inspired by their sound in his writing for Strange Charm.

Finally, bringing a heavy reggae and funk feel with him, Strange Charm has Dale Osbaldeston playing the drums. Currently a second year performance major at MacEwan, Dale brings the back beat to the band with his influences ranging from the Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to groups like Bob Marley and the Wailers and the Main Squeeze. Also an active performer in the Edmonton music scene, he lives and breathes music at least as much as everyone else in Strange Charm.
